For Marcia, Fox Valley Literacy is a path to her dreams. She was born and raised in Brazil, Fortaleza. There, she earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in business. She worked in Human Resources for many years for a big corporation. Now, one of her goals is to work as an HR manager here in the United States. “Thanks to the opportunity that Fox Valley is giving me, I receive free conversation group classes and a tutor that meets me every week.” Marcia is very proud of her level of English, as she can understand how the field of human resources works in the U.S, “With my tutor Katheleen, we have been reading books about HR and having conversations about it; now I feel more confident about my profession in this country.”
When Marcia first found out about Fox Valley Literacy, she was a bit insecure because this was something new for her. “I was afraid to take English classes, but the staff made me feel confident about myself, and they really helped me to take the first step.” Now, she doesn’t only attend classes regularly, but she also helps as a volunteer in another organization. “Thanks to the immense help from staff, I have a volunteer job as a receptionist twice a week, where I get to interact with people and keep practicing my English skills.”
We asked Marcia what she would say to someone considering becoming a student at Fox Valley Literacy, and she shared: “I would encourage everyone to take the first step, as I did. Fox Valley Literacy makes you feel at home, and the staff is so nice to you.”
