Meet Becky!

For Becky, flexibility is key to being a good tutor, whether that means adjusting her assignments to meet her student’s needs or shifting to all virtual tutoring. In fact, she and her student have met almost entirely by phone! After retiring, Becky wanted to find a way to help her community that would let her set her own schedule. Although most of her hobbies are active, like hiking and waterskiing, she had wanted to be a teacher when she was younger and Fox Valley Literacy seemed like a second chance!

She enjoys that tutoring makes her think about English and about learning in new and interesting ways. Tutoring her student has been a particularly meaningful experience, as she is very familiar with his job and able to help him in specific ways. She says, “Something that keeps me motivated is that my student is so motivated.” Since they have started tutoring, her student has even gotten a new job!
