Meet Nichole!

Meet Nichole!

Nichole’s passion for helping others and working at the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay has inspired her to become a tutor. Nichole has been with us for almost two years and currently is working with three students. “I really enjoy the opportunity to learn with and from students.” Languages have always been an interest of hers, and tutoring for Fox Valley Literacy has allowed her to keep practicing her Spanish. “With my three students, I have the chance to practice my pronunciation. I appreciate the opportunity to be humble and mispronounce words, and be corrected by them. I am glad to have that experience with my students and allow them to teach me too.”

Besides the regular classes that Nichole has with her students in the classroom, they often go to different locations so that she can offer her students a hands-on experience. “One of my students is from Venezuela. She arrived in the United States not too long ago, and winter is completely new for her. She needed to buy winter clothes for her and her children.” Nichole shared that they had a fantastic experience going to the store, not only to buy what the student needed, but to also understand the proper clothing for the season. “I had the opportunity to teach her the difference between snow boots and snowshoes, or that sometimes a full jacket is not warm enough. Those things that you take for granted because we already know them.”

As a stepmom of two, school-age children, having a full-time job, and being constantly active with the community, Nichole understands that balancing our everyday lives to do multiple things can be challenging. “I am constantly impressed by my students. I know it’s hard to find a balance between work, life, and making time to learn and study English, but they are genuinely interested, and they want to learn and share their experiences with you. I would describe the students at Fox Valley Literacy as hardworking people.”
